Kohlrabi is a cool-season brassica that forms a swollen, crunchy stem (“bulb”) with a mild, cabbage-like flavor. Suitable for kitchen gardens, raised beds, and containers in Pakistan, these seeds are easy for beginners when grown in the right season.
Sow seeds directly in garden beds or in seed trays for transplanting. Plant seeds about ½ inch (1–1.5 cm) deep. Thin or transplant seedlings to 20–30 cm spacing when they have 2–3 true leaves. Keep soil evenly moist for steady root and bulb development.
Ideal germination temperature: 10°C–22°C.
In Pakistan, best sowing windows are autumn (September–November) for winter harvests and late winter to early spring (January–March) in cooler regions for spring harvests. Kohlrabi prefers cool growing conditions for tender, non-woody bulbs.
Use fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Maintain consistent moisture and mulch to conserve water and suppress weeds. Provide full sun to partial shade. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer at planting and side-dress if growth slows. Avoid heavy nitrogen late in development to prevent woody bulbs.
Kohlrabi bulbs are usually ready in 45–70 days depending on variety. Harvest when bulbs are 6–10 cm in diameter for best texture and flavor. Larger bulbs may become tough and woody.
